The webshop of Casa Walhalla was created because we ourselves are crazy about the Oriental & Arabic Bohemian “Alpujarras” style. We did not know the entire La Alpujarra… until we bought a holiday home there and we saw these great products in the beautiful surrounding white villages.
History tells us that the MOORS conquered Spain from Morocco in 711 and ruled here until 1525. They were the last to leave the mountain landscape of Las Alpujarras, but the landscape and many of the Arabic products remained. In 1609, the year in which the 12-year truce with the Netherlands was concluded, all the Moors and a large part of the Moriscos (the Muslims who converted to Christianity) were expelled from Spain.
A piece of Moorish past revived during a visit to the charming white villages in the Las Alpujarras area.
Besides all the beautiful home accessories and textiles, the Moors were also fond of spices and are responsible for the use of cumin, coriander, cinnamon, anise, nutmeg and mint, for which Spain is famous. They also brought dried fruit, citrus fruits and sugar cane. Al-Andalus is a spice blend based on an old Moorish recipe. This full, sweet blend is characterised by ingredients such as smoked paprika and cumin seeds. It forms the basis for tasty dishes with a southern Spanish touch. Delicious for a paella or use it as a flavouring in a fresh salad.
